Honda boosts air bag recall to 833,000 additional vehicles
Quote:Washington— Honda Motor Co. said Monday it expanded its recall of Honda and Acura brand models for airbags that can deploy with too much pressure.
The Japanese automaker said it was expanding the recall of 2001-03 Honda and Acura models to vehicles that may have the original driver's air bag module replaced with an affected service part, adding 833,000 vehicles to the recall.
Honda has now called back 1.6 million vehicles over the issue since 2008. At least 12 incidents and one death are linked to the issue since 2010.
Honda said it has learned that some faulty parts were installed in these vehicles during repairs and is notifying all owners because it has not been able to determine the specific vehicles that received those parts.
Honda is searching for 2,430 faulty air bag inflator parts but only needs to fix vehicles that have had a new air bag installed, said Chris Martin, a Honda spokesman.
If a driver's air bag deploys with a faulty part, the inflator could produce excessive internal pressure, causing the air bag inflator casing to rupture and metal fragments to pass through the airbag cushion material, potentially causing injury or death to vehicle occupants.
The recall announced Monday includes 833,000 2001-02 Accord and Civic cars, 2002 Odyssey minivans; 2002 and 2003 CR-V sport utility vehicles, selected 2002 and 2003 Acura 3.2 TL sedans and 2003 Acura 3.2 CL coupes.
In 2008, Honda announced a plan to recall fewer than 4,000 model year 2001 Accord and Civic vehicles to replace the driver's air bag inflator, based on an analysis of four incidents in which air bag deployments resulted in rupture of the inflator.
After the original recall in November 2008, two additional incidents were reported, including one fatality from a vehicle not included in that recall.
As a result, Honda said in July 2009 it was expanding the recall to another 440,000 2001-02 Accord, Civic and certain 2002 Acura TL vehicles. The recall was again expanded in February 2010 to 379,000 vehicles to cover additional vehicles with the potential problems.

That is pretty scary, yet ironic that something supposed to protect you in an accident can cause more harm than if it didn't work at all

A friend has an '02 Accord that he wrecked back in '04 and the air bags didn't deploy, honestly after reading this it's probably a good thing. The impact was so bad the engine dropped and literally had to have a whole new front end. $12,000 damage but Honda said there was nothing wrong with the car at the time idk

I told him that was bullshit but again might have saved his life since he's now got a recall for this very thing being discussed. He also got an extended warranty on his transmission due to so many issues with that model year and yes as soon as it was gone - transmission went.

Isn't that the tech though? The engines drop because its supposedly safer in an accident. I think the Benzs and some of the Japanese and I think even Caddy had that, where in a massive head on collision, the engine drops so that it doesn't get pushed back into the passenger compartment.

Rev that's correct, the engine drops to protect the driver and passenger but was ironic that with an impact this severe not one airbag deployed so had to of been an issue. But Honda said there was nothing wrong wtf he's now got a recall notice for flying debree if the air bags do deploy. I honestly think they're dumber than a box of rocks.

When I was in my head-on crash last year, the air bag broke my left wrist and then caused my eye glass to put a 2 inch cut into my forehead as I hit the bag.

All and all I considered it a good outcome for me.

Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?
