5 Hybrids to avoid from Green Cars

From the Green Cars Report.

Our infamous Lexus HS 250h is on the list as well as two Hondas and a BMW and another Lexus.

Hybrid does not always equal great value or great gas mileage.

The best part of this article:

Quote:Which brings home a crucial point: How you use a hybrid matters a lot to the gas mileage you get.

Spend most of your miles below 30 mph in stop-and-go urban and suburban traffic, and you really take advantage of the hybrid's engine-shutoff and all-electric running abilities.

But hammer out hundreds of miles on Interstate highways--as buyers often do on trips in the family crossover--and your efficiency will suffer.

We said the Lexus RX 450h is a judgment call because if you use it largely around town, you'll likely do OK on mileage. But be aware that if you're expecting to do a lot of high-speed trips, a diesel luxury crossover like the Mercedes-Benz ML 350 BlueTEC may give you better overall efficiency.

Better yet, avoid all hybrids and go for a diesel :smile;

The concept of the hybrid isn't bad, just implemented wrong. There are effective ways of making a hybrid lightweight and cost effective, with great performance gains. Toyota got the concept down pact with the 2013 Camry Hybrid, with fuel economy numbers topping charts and straight line times almost in line with V6 midsizers. For the most part, I think the problem lies in the transmission shift pattern, less so than with the hybrid powertrain itself. The key is torque.

^

Most hybrids use CVT's.
No "shift patterns."

And Ford's next gen hybrids are finally making some sense, and prices are dropping as well.

Or does anyone feel that getting over 47mpg in a small people mover (C-Max) is not worth $26K?
Or how about the new 48mpg Fusion and MKZ hybrids that will offer great performance as well?

I've got no doubt the Ford Hybrids beat their Toyota competitors in several ways, but especially in retaining Ford's normal fun-to-drive dynamics. I also like the Volt. I'd like to see a Ford plug-in hybrid C-Max vs. Chevy Volt comparison.

No offense to the hybrid fans but no thanks. Keep it and I will keep my R/T and when we pass on the street, I will be the one wearing an ear to ear grin.

I think the hybrid owners will be grinning every time they pass you at the pump, with your confused look, after just recently pumping $70, and having to do it again.

Ha, ha, the joke is on you.laugh My Chally does quite well at speed and have hit 30 mpg at times and I have no problem feeding her. Now, if it gets to the point where I don't want to pump gas into her anymore, I am afraid I will feel that way about all cars.
By the way, my co-worker left for Dallas a couple of days ago in his hybrid Escape. When he gets back I am going to see how well his Escape on gas. I will be willing to bet on the highway, not any better than my Chally.
