Aston Martin has confirmed that it's continuing work on an SUV rival to the upcoming Bentley EXP 9 F. The car will be loosely based on the Lagonda concept that was shown at the 2009 Geneva Auto Show. That concept was heavily criticized for its appearance, but the production model will be completely restyled.

In common with the 2009 showcar, the new SUV will be based on the running gear of the Mercedes GL-Class. Aston admits that a deal is in place for Mercedes to supply platforms and drivetrains. This deal will even extend to the engines. While Aston is likely to offer its familiar 6.0-liter V12 in a flagship model, a range of smaller, Mercedes-sourced gas, diesel and hybrid models will also be offered.

The thing with Lagonda is that they have traditionally competed in markets that Aston Martin competes in. At the time of the Aston Martin Lagonda in the 80s or whatever, they weren't producing another 4 door car. They have the Rapide now, and that is why they aren't producing a 4 door saloon under the Lagonda brand.
