Tesla Model S rated at 89 MPGe, 88 city and 90 highway. Miles per gallon gasoline equivalent is a measure of the average distance traveled per unit of energy consumed. MPGe is used by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to compare energy consumption of alternative fuel vehicles, plug-in electric vehicles and other advanced technology vehicles with the fuel economy of conventional internal combustion vehicles expressed as miles per US gallon.

Only time will tell how premium EVs will do on the market. Nobody has had success (in terms of volume) with hybrids in this price range. The Model S lacks in many departments where its competition shines, primarily interior design and quality, as well as clarity of their infotainment system. However Model S customers are bound to have different interests and purchasing criteria than your run-of-the-mill 5-series or E-class customer; so it may see some success. Only time will tell. Tesla is an American automaker I am willing to root for.
