Photo credit: Automobile June 19, 2012 By: ncguy Quote:The fight for pony-car supremacy has been raging for decades. Chevrolet Camaro versus Ford Mustang is a duel without a definitive ending. Battles are fought and won with every new variant and each model year change, yet there's never enough momentum in any one direction to decide the war. ![]() Quote:While this feud won't end anytime soon, the stakes are higher than ever in the latest Mustang-Camaro skirmish. The 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 and the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 are the heavy guns in the pony-car arms race, representing the pinnacle of performance and technology. A win here is as close as it gets to declaring victory. http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews/dri...lby_gt500/ |

RE: Automobile - 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 vs 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 - On Track
From the article:
Quote:Entering the turns, the Shelby displays a boatload of body roll. That's not completely surprising given the GT500's humble origins, but I expected more from the Bilstein two-mode adjustable shocks, which are part of the $3495 Performance Package. The car wallows like a stuck pig and I desperately attempted to load up the outside wheels on corner entry. Despite my best efforts, I couldn't calm the Shelby to precisely attack a corner. To make matters worse, the understeer in the fast turns was significant, meaning I was unable to carry the speed through the important fast sections of the lap. Can we say: Holy Understeer! Quote: It looked like the chubbier ZL1 was fighting a losing battle, but as I entered the first few turns, I noticed something significant. I felt like I was driving a sports car. The steering was sharp and responsive and the car reacted instantaneously to my actions. The body roll is a fraction of the GT500's, which is simply titanic. I began smiling. The ZL1 was magnificent to drive and already I was blown away. The car rotates effortlessly mid-corner and power down is predictable and with poise. It oozed with confidence, daring me to push even harder. Again - the ZL1 being down 82 hp and 75 ft lbs torque and weighting 275 lbs more it's not going to be as quick but.... DAMN THAT THING WILL HANDLE! Definitely the better every day car for sure

The only thing... let me say this one more time... The only thing the ZL1 needs ASAP is the LS9! This would make this car superior in every way... I would also like it to loose about 300 lbs but due to it's underpinning that's not possible so I'll say this one more time - LS9!

Maybe ford should have added more HP
“The build sheet is the wish list of any racer: lightweight high-revving dry-sump LS7 engine; carbon-ceramic brakes; integrated coolers; true aerodynamic downforce, and a significant reduction in curb weight. This car could only come from Chevrolet, and could only be called the Z/28.” |

Maybe wings was right. Ford should offer the track pack separately. I know good and well I'd hate to have to buy the GT500 with the track pack included seeing how useless it is

I'd say the ZL1 really only needs a solid 600HP. Let Ford have their million HP. “The build sheet is the wish list of any racer: lightweight high-revving dry-sump LS7 engine; carbon-ceramic brakes; integrated coolers; true aerodynamic downforce, and a significant reduction in curb weight. The times say quite a bit. I guess the road course is just not the Mustang's forte.

1.15 seconds for that missed shift would have embarrassed the mustang even further.

I'm surprised wings hasn't come in here all butt hurt yet. I guess him and AON are on the svt forums consoling everyone with phrases like "nobody cares about handling.. these cars will never see the track.. "
Lolol Or maybe he is at Ford HQ having a "hitler moment" “The build sheet is the wish list of any racer: lightweight high-revving dry-sump LS7 engine; carbon-ceramic brakes; integrated coolers; true aerodynamic downforce, and a significant reduction in curb weight. Lets see, not too long ago the megazines were waxing poetic about the Mustang and how great the car was. Now they are saying it wollows like a stuck pig. What happens when Ford makes enough changes to get these little journalistic pimples to ohhh and ahhh about the Mustang again and say the Camaro wollows like a stuck pig?

I'm surprised The Mustang understeers. I thought it would have been a tail happy rear steer car.

RE: Automobile - 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 vs 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 - On Track
These comparos are getting old, GotMopar is right one minute the mustang is perfect at everything then it wallows like a pig, which i believe is an extreme over exaggeration, the camaro probably has less roll, but as we all know the camaro is a more track focused car its the perfect balance of power and handling, the GT500 will outrun the ZL1 in nearly every race that doesn't involve a race track, its power is simple brutal. This also shows with Zl1 that even though its a 4000 lbs car, it can still be a brilliant track car. I really cant wait to see what chrysler doe[/i]s with 2013 challenger SRT8 and its plannned S/C for the 392, it already has the 2 mode dampers and upgraded suspension tweaks, some tiny other adjustments and the results could be impressive.
This country can’t be knocked out with one punch. We get right back up again and when we do the world is going to hear the roar of our engines. Yeah, it’s halftime America. And, our second half is about to begin.
