RE: Project LS-S10: Got some Street Legal Performance going on
Had a friend come and help me today on removing the crank bolt. We accomplished the mission in no time, but that wasn't good enough for us. So,we decided to remove the pulley....which turned out to be an absolute BITCH. First, we went to AutoZone because they have loner tools. I told them I need a crank pulley remover tool. So they give me one....the wrong one. Instead of giving me the newer style removal tool, they gave me the old style tool. We tried making that tool work,bu we couldn't. So we took it back and got the correct one. Now for the funny part. The tool they gave us was for removing chrysler pulleys, but they said it would work with the newer style SBC. Which it did....with some rigging. Not to the actual tool, but the part that goes into the hole on the crankshaft. The pieces included weren't long enough to reach. So I grabbed a pushrod from the engine to use as the rod. Bad idea. This is what happened....

As you can clearly tell, the pushrod is bent. I didn't think this would happen as pushrods are pretty damn strong. But not solid. This gives me an excuse to buy new pushrods anyway yeeees Anyway, we rigged up a ratchet extension that ended up working and removed the damn pulley. 2thumbsup
After removing the pulley,I removed the timing set cover, which was a breeze. Then it was on to the timing set and oil pump. The oil pump came off with ease. So did the timing chain...most of it anyway. I was able to remove the cam gear part and chain with no problems. But the sprocket that goes on the crankshaft, refuses to come off. No idea why,but oh well, it will come off.

Next I removed the cam retainer plate and camshaft.
This is what the front of the block looks like now.
You can still see the other sprocket stuck on the crankshaft.

Lastly,I removed the flywheel.

Not really sure what else needs to be removed,I'd say not much at this point. Next step is to clean the engine and give it some color. 2thumbsup
All in all, pretty happy with what I got done today beer

RE: Project LS-S10: I bent a pushrod :(
I heard about that chrysler pulley tool working on Ls engines,,. I've never seen people use a pushrod however lol. Slacker.

“The build sheet is the wish list of any racer: lightweight high-revving dry-sump LS7 engine; carbon-ceramic brakes; integrated coolers; true aerodynamic downforce, and a significant reduction in curb weight. This car could only come from Chevrolet, and could only be called the Z/28.”

Got my camshaft kit from fed-ex the other day. Not really much to see. Here it is beside the old stock 5.3 cam.

RE: Project LS-S10: Thinking about a mini-spool. Good idea?
We all know GM doesn't have the strongest rearends around, but I thought about installing a mini-spool to help with the V8. Is this a good idea or not? I have no idea about mini-spools. What do you guys think?

His build is probably going as slow as mine for the same two reasons: no time and a college kid's budget.

That's at least why mine is going slow. HOPEFULLY I can get my $1700 heads by April. I just need to keep spending in check and hope that I get a decent tax return this season.

Well in the next couple of months I should be getting the short block disassembled. I really have had a lack of time on my hands. That might change in January.

A 14 bolt?

Unless you're building a full on race truck, a 12 bolt should be all you need. A properly built ten bolt should be enough.
