What kind of cam should I put in the 5.3 when I start?
I'm starting to think ahead at what I wish to do with the 5.3 when I get it. I like to think these things ahead of time.
So my question is what cam should I go with? The stock cam won't be enough. I wan't something with some lope, but not a super long lope.
My eye is on a LS6 camshaft from a C5 Z06. As it will work with the 5.3 with no other mods. It seems to be a very popular swap too. It seems to give a slight lope, but it also seems to really wake the 5.3 up. Got the idea from a HRM build. I will also change the valve springs to LS6 units as well.
Any cams you guys would recommend? idk

If you really do put a 5.3 in the s-10 it's not going to matter. You are going to have a tire smoker regardless. Are you going to make your truck a track toy?

Download Comp Cams free CamQuest6 program from their website {or google it} and you can quickly see what cam you want to run with, based on all your input parameters. You can also play around with many variables, to see their effect. It is pretty accurate too. Don't forget to download your stock air flow data, and plug that in too. It really makes a difference to be accurate.
...or,
give me all the parameters, and I will run several cams for you.

Also what he said about that much motor in a mini truck. That's why I am wondering if it is gonna be a track toy.

Yea, a light tap on the throttle might break the wheels rather easily too. It can be a pain in the ass on the street but it would be nice as a drag toy.

You can dial in a cam that will work at higher rpm, say 2000 to 6300, where the torque will not be at the takeoff, but build quickly after launch.

It's all in the cam, folks.beer

laugh In my world, that isn't high at all. Can you do that with a OHV engine? I always was under the impression that you need to replace the cam. You can change timing with a OHC engine by turning the cams, I'm assuming this can be done with a OHV engine also?

Thanks for the tip Wings :2thumbsup:
I'll see if I can find out all the specs and what not.
It will probably be a DD for a little while. At least until I can get my hand on something to save gas in
