Well, think about their decision back then based on the following criteria, then and now....

1. Mustang had NO competition back then.
2. Mustang race fans everywhere would be angry if they did, and voiced it LOUDLY.
3. New stang will be much, much lighter.
4. New stang will be sold globally, introducing millions of fans to it who have pleaded with Ford to bring it, many of whom have ZERO legacy or preference of past designs. Sales should explode, and a localized fan base that prefers the excellent and rugged solid axle design, will be a relatively small voice, making that decision easy.
5. It will be biased more toward sports car than muscle car, so less weight and lower CG demands will sort of dictate what design will be best.

Basically moving more towards the same class as the Nissan Z, Hyundai Genesis coupe, etc?

I really don't know.

Just a few specifics, like weight loss, global sales, powertrain choices, etc. that I then base an opinion on.

I could be off, but logic dictates it nonetheless.

Like I said in my commentary, I think Ford and Chevy would benefit from having lightweight compact pony cars and larger muscle coupes, appealing to both crowds instead of trying to do a hybrid of both.

I'm not sure what logic has to do with your tagline there, but isn't "mother of all butthurts" a bit childish for a Ford employee to have on the bottom of every post they make? facepalm

I'll be the first to admit that there are some things the F-Series does better than the Silverado. And by that I mean "donate it's back axle to the company's sporty car."

the customer benefits, not the corporation.

Bragging rights on sales
Complexity
competition from their own brands

Ford is in it for the money.
As is, pretty much EVERY manufacturer.

I don't think it would present competition. The pony cars would have turbo 4's, NA and turbo V6s, and maybe one V8 for a top end model while the muscle coupes would be V8 only.

Heeeeellllllll NOOOOO!!!!

You know who designs Mustangs?
Ford fans that want to beat Camaro.

So, in a Ford top brass mtg discussion, it might not be said.

But, everywhere else....HELL YES.

you simply can't divorce passion and desire for winning performance from Mustang fans and Mustang engineers.
seems to have worked as it does it's intended job.

the term stays.
Sorry it hurts so much.

Deal with it.

Normally I'd debate the issue, but since you appear to see the Mustang as an extension of your own personality then I have no choice but to wish you the best of luck in finding good psychological help. Seriously... that's just weird.

RE: 2015 Mustang will be much closer to a "world car" than any Mustang before it
This upsets me, the problem is that the Mustang SHOULD NOT be a "world" car, the mustang is American as apple pie, everyone knows where the mustang is from, why in the hell does it need to be a world car, stupid ass choice imo, and the mustang should always have some retro in it no matter how small it may be, making this car look like a god damn Aston Martin mated with a new fusion coupe would also be a mistake, and imo will be the end of the mustang, i hate to say it but im worried that 2014 will be the last of the true mustangs live axle and all.

This country can’t be knocked out with one punch. We get right back up again and when we do the world is going to hear the roar of our engines. Yeah, it’s halftime America. And, our second half is about to begin.

Ford has quite the challenge ahead of them, messing with an icon like Mustang.

But, there is potential to really grow sales and that is good for both Ford and mustang, overall. Much better than killing it off like some brands have done.

So think of it this way,
if Ferrari were to never export their cars and only keep them in italy, who would that be good for? Not italians, because look how far they have come going global.

The world is begging for mustangs, just as we have begged for certain other products.

nuff said on that

Very true, i just dont wanna see the Mustang go all european like just to sell it over there, keep it strongly american and sell it too the world, people have always liked the mustang for being an american pony car, no need to change that approach imo. Just evolve it.

"Just evolve it."

I think you nailed it with that remark.

But you have to know that Ford will try it's best to make it still look like a mustang.

Dont lincoln it up

“The build sheet is the wish list of any racer: lightweight high-revving dry-sump LS7 engine; carbon-ceramic brakes; integrated coolers; true aerodynamic downforce, and a significant reduction in curb weight. This car could only come from Chevrolet, and could only be called the Z/28.”
