The Toyota Prius, the most popular hybrid in the world, was also the most popular plug-in vehicle in U.S. last month.

Compared to sales of the Chevrolet Volt and the Nissan Leaf, which sold 1,462 and 370 units, respectively, the $32,000 Prius Plug-in quietly sold 1,654 copies in April, reports PluginCars. With such strong name recognition and pent-up demand for a Prius with a cord, this shouldn't really have been a surprise. But it still kind of is.

Toyota sold more Prius models in the U.S. last month than ever before in April (March 2012 was the Prius' best month ever), even though the number of selling days was short. The four members of the "Prius family" sold a combined 25,168 units, an increase of 126.9 percent compared to April 2011 (which was right after the Japanese tsunami). Overall, Toyota and Lexus sold 32,593 hybrids last month, 30,126 of them wearing the Toyota badge, 2,467 of them the upper-class Lexus models.

The Prius... having been launched and given attention is for all intents the Hershey's of Hybrid/Alternatives. I hate it... because the vehicle is Average at best... and there is certainly a better alternative (in mainstream chocolate Dove is just better).. in this case.. the Volt.



I'm thinking that the Cruze Diesel is gonna seriously intrude on the Jetta's almost 5K number in that segment. This is relevant for obvious reasons. The Cruze is playing in a situation that I have, since it went on sale, said is a dangerous one. It's almost incentive free... has no variants... and only relies on it's Content/Efficiency position as a selling point. It is ludicrous to me for GM to not follow the formula it has successfully used in of all things.. the Camaro.. to sell more Cruzes. The Sedan-Only ideology, along with the extremely limited, almost Honda Civic-ish Fleet sales is what is ultimately killing sales, causing this car to fall to #4 above the Elantra. I mention that tired ass Hyundai because it at least has the balls to have a 2 door version. Chevy... to counter such a drop could easily offer a 2-Door Cruze...most preferably the Tru140 Concept.. an already available Hatch... and of course the Diesel version.

The Prius has a prefabricated fanbase to work with, so as sad as this is it's not really a surprise. Prius buyers tend to be fanatical folks.
