Ford content with grabbing profits, not sales crown with all-new Ford Fusion
Source
Photo credit: January 24, 2012 By: CF staff Ford Motor Co. (F) Chief Executive Officer Alan Mulally has suggested that his stylish new Fusion sedan is seeking sales supremacy over Toyota Motor Corp. (7203)’s Camry. That’s not exactly what the boss wants, executives said. Ford can’t make enough Fusions to outsell the Camry, the top car in the U.S. for the past decade, according to researcher IHS Automotive. Instead, with Fusion, Mulally is aiming for a balance between commanding top dollar for each car and selling a lot more of them. “Between price and volume, we’ll sort out the right mix,” Jim Farley, Ford’s global marketing chief, said in an interview. “I don’t think we’re very enamored with being No. 1 just to be No. 1. We’re much more enamored with getting the right price point and the right kind of people to buy the car.” Reviews |

Sounds like they're making excuses for not being able to beat the Camry and are covering up in advance that the Fusion may not deliver all that has been promised.

So 250 K per year at a higher profit than 300 K without.
Brilliant. After already beating everyone in quality, the new Fusion now takes it to the next level in style, driving dynames and fuel economy. Besides, moving upscale a bit more and adding mega content and exclusive features, only means that the price will go up as well. Smart move. Let everyone else de-content in price and sell more. Ford has the better plan. And Honda and Toyota don't sell large and mid sized cars, only one or the other. So sales matter in TOTAL in this segment. ======= Call it the Lincoln Apology Momentum and Employee Appreciation Sale Spectacular. Or, just....ummmm.....LAMEASS |

There are two sides to this. One is what Poodles said, which could bare some truth and what Wings is saying. I personally don't care for sales crowns as long as profits are being made and is selling in respectable numbers.

I don't care what they aim for, this car is hot and if it has a respectable V6 for a decent price I will be having one.

Having the best selling car isn't always a good thing.
I'll take this over the Camry any day. Besides, the Fusion did really well last year as is. Crushed the Malibu by 50k. ![]() |

Like every statement offered by any auto executive, you can take a multiple of ways.
You can look at it as a cop out that Ford won't be able to meet an expectation of sales number supremacy. Or, you can view it as a truly intelligent way of appropriately addressing the marketplace. Since Alan Mullaly has done little wrong since taking the helm at Ford, I will gladly latch onto the latter opinion. If I were to buy a new Fusion, as a consumer all I would care about is "am I driving one of the best midsize sedans offered?". That is a resounding "Yes". ![]() They call me Ford-O Baggins. Must have the PRECIOUS!!!!! |

Just heard some great rumors about the next Taurus, but as usual, I can't say anything. Sorry. Way too early anyway.
But, in the event you hear some cool rumors out there in internet land….there is a good chance it is true. Very exciting. ======= Call it the Lincoln Apology Momentum and Employee Appreciation Sale Spectacular. Or, just....ummmm.....LAMEASS |

If I make the rumors myself and then tell myself they are true does that count?
If so, the Taurus will be RWD. 2004 Mazda 6 S |

good one ATV
“The build sheet is the wish list of any racer: lightweight high-revving dry-sump LS7 engine; carbon-ceramic brakes; integrated coolers; true aerodynamic downforce, and a significant reduction in curb weight. This car could only come from Chevrolet, and could only be called the Z/28.” |
