National Highway Traffic Safety Administrator David Strickland said the White House had been informed in September of the June fire, but didn't ask the agency to keep the information secret. NHTSA briefed Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, Strickland told three House Republicans in letters released Friday.

It's an inherent problem with Li-ion batteries. There obviously needs to be clean up procedures for Li-ion battery cars after they crash.

I still don't understand the fuss about this. Right from when the Prius came out, I remember seeing ones that had been in accidents where 'HYBRID' was marked very clearly on the side of it. They obviously need special handling in the event of an accident.

If the conspiracy theorists want to jump all over this one, maybe they should be trying to figure out why it was so totally blown out of proportion in the first place.
