Question About Chrysler LeBarons
My brother is looking for a cheap car and found a 1989 Lebaron convertible that he really likes. He's pretty ignorant when it comes to cars or anything else involving common sense, so I can't tell you more than he has told me about it.

This is the link: http://muskegon.craigslist.org/cto/2650573275.html

I'm assuming it has the 2.5L I4 in it, and it's an automatic. What can you guys tell me about the reliability of these?

They are great cars depending on how well they are maintained. Check out the history if you can and go from there.

RE: Question About Chrysler LeBarons
I'd try to find a 3.0V6 model with a 5 speed manual...although it may be difficult to find.

If not, I'd still want a manual with the 4 cylinder models.

The 3 speed auto's really hurt gas mileage and performance.

RE: Question About Chrysler LeBarons
The car is 22, going on 23, years old. I don't care what make or model it is, the key to this car's dependability is how it was treated.

RE: Question About Chrysler LeBarons
If he does, prepare for a car that will need a lot of repair, and that is a rattle trap.

Sister had one years ago.
Best day was when she sold it.

RE: Question About Chrysler LeBarons
With an old car, there are parts that just age and dry out, with hoses and gaskets (both body and mechanical) challenged by time, and wiring is subject to niggling rust and breaks. And old car has it own challenges of maintenance. So much stuff gets scrapped and recycled now that finding replacement parts can also be a challenge depending upon the model. The engine and transmission are expensive parts but other issues can mount in an old car from time, not just miles.

Or you can ask wings because he know's all, but forgets to mention that all cars including Fords from the eighties were rattle traps that needed repair. Go drive an eighties Taurus, what a pos.

RE: Question About Chrysler LeBarons
I have not only driven her convertible, but wrenched on it as well.

My point:

mopar's from the 90's were bottom drawer.
mopar convertibles from the 90's were worst yet, and structure was an afterthought.

Thanks badass

RE: Question About Chrysler LeBarons
Well I think he is going to get it. He has been pretty set on it, and the owner seems like a great guy.

We went to look at a 99 Buick Lesabre today. The guy seemed really shady, and he told me he flipped cars (he had like 3 there he was selling where he lives in the trailer park). We went over the whole car and everything seemed pretty good on the car itself, until I saw the miles on the title which was transferred in 2003. In the last 8 years it supposed had only 25k miles put on it, but this car was clearly not garaged or babied. I was suspicious so I ran a carfax and sure enough it was last reported in 2007 with 178k miles, not 118k like it showed now. So I walked, and after I left I called the police on this scumbag. I don't mind people trying to flip cars to make money if they do it honestly, but assholes like this ruin it for everyone.

So at like 9 tonight we finally got to go take a look at the LeBaron, so it was dark and raining so I didn't get a good look. The owner seemed like a great guy though, much different from the scumbag I had dealt with earlier. So I told my brother if he wants to he might as well go for it...so I think he's going to make the guy a deal tomorrow.

All cars from the eighties and early nineties were iffy at best, not just K-cars and all things considered, at least Lebarons and Daytonas didn't burn to the ground...cough cough Fiero cough cough, or self destruct like cough cough Fox flatform Mustangs cough cough.
