RE: 2014 Impala engine gets a high-tech lift - docCarter - 09-17-2012 12:35 PM Does that mean I'll be able to scream Vtec? ![]() Jokes aside, nice. RE: 2014 Impala engine gets a high-tech lift - REVolution - 09-17-2012 12:36 PM Ok, so when you want the performance profile, it extends the pushrod (so to speak) so that it pushes the valve down further allowing more air to flow in? In Eco Mode, it retracts the push rod so it allows less air? Is that what I am supposed to see it as? From the pic you have there, Spook, it looks like it pushes the outer casing up into the push rod so its a shorter stroke for the rod to travel. Yup. Its pretty much that damn simple. Simple and ingenious at the same damn time. But it wouldn't be as cool RE: 2014 Impala engine gets a high-tech lift - REVolution - 09-17-2012 12:43 PM jspookss;231317 Wrote:RevOver9000;231313 Wrote:Ok, so when you want the performance profile, it extends the pushrod (so to speak) so that it pushes the valve down further allowing more air to flow in? Yea! Its a lot more simple than I thought it was going to be. A lifter has always been in the block in an OHV engine. The pushrod sits on a surface that is under oil pressure. That way, there is no need for a lash adjustment. The oil pressure moves the surface to take up any wear in the system resulting from valve stem or seat wear. Pushrods made from hollow tubes with pinholes on both ends allows the lifter to provide top end lubrication without using oil holes in the castings or external lines. The fact that one does not have to get a pain in the ass valve lash check as part of normal service was icing on the cake. I call the lifter a lash adjuster because that is on of its functions. Ed Cole was a very smart man. RE: 2014 Impala engine gets a high-tech lift - RougeRiver - 09-17-2012 12:58 PM jspookss;231311 Wrote:Now that's the old version for DOD. But its similar in concept. Since this iteration they have a variable fluid ratio that acts like this newer multi profile system. I got cued into what they are up to by a very well written post at GMI by someone debunking every dated criticism of OHV. The writer posted some diagram of OHV with variable profiles that I traced to printed patent publications. If I use kind of wierd terms of anacronyms in my posts it is because that makes it easier for a reader to do a technical literature search of the subject. I look forward to the next generation V8 from GM.
