RE: McLaren working on shooting brake estate - bluestinger66 - 04-20-2012 07:29 AM A shooting brake is any object massive enough to be used as a bracing perch to maintain a steady aim when firing a weapon. It dates back to before cars were around when guns were large and heavy. If you were hunting in the woods and saw an animal you wanted to take down, you could brace against a large rock or a fallen tree and they would be shooting brakes. As it applies here, a shooting brake is usually a station wagon with a roofline just below shoulder height so a shooter can brace his elbow or forearm on the roof to steady the gun without being in an awkward position.
