BMW Patents Its Electric Turbocharger Technology
[Image: P90081905.jpg]
Quote:BMW has now patented its own idea on how to address these issues, and it involves the use of an often rumored "electric turbocharger".

We reported before that BMW has considered (or may still be considering) the use of an electric turbocharger as part of a potential tri-turbo 6-cylinder engine for the next generation F80 M3 (the latest rumors lean towards a bi-turbo V6 as the new M3's powerplant). While we still don't know if the next gen M3 will be powered by an engine with an electric turbocharger, we do now know how such an electric turbocharger would be implemented, courtesy of a patent application BMW submittted to the German patent office.

It would be great for launches, but its still so unnecessary. If they kept the inline with a sequential setup you'd cut the weight and still be amazingly effective for just about anything.

I thought the whole point of turbo charging was so you didnt have to use power to get power like a supercharger...... Now I understand that it probably wouldnt draw much electricity in the first place, but stilllaugh

RE: BMW Patents Its Electric Turbocharger Technology
Instant on turbos make a heck of a lot of sense, and everyone seems to be looking into them. It might also be an HTT, or hybrid turbo, which adds a high speed turbine generator and compressor.
The benefit of electric, is near zero turbo lag. Currently, everything is sized or compromised for quicker TTT (time to torque) which usually compromises top end (quicker spool up from restricting flow area). Take away that restriction, and you can downsize further, while also increasing efficiency and power and your torque curve looks as flat and straight as Casa's biceps (LOL, toneless wonder that he is).

So what we are currently seeing, is modestly updated turbo tech from very recently. What you WILL see in the near future, is radically different turbos with lots of new tech and processes, in so many flavors currently being evaluated for each application (binary flow, series sequential, twin scroll, variable, electric, turbo-super combo, etc.).

And we need to stop associating small engines, with cheap.
That is old thinking, when they were actually cheap, and people paid less to get them.

Future higher tech, small dense motors will be carefully engineered with premium materials and processes, and capable of some serious BMEP levels, and then some. Today, GM currently has their GTDI regal motor pushing the most BMEP, around 24 bar I believe (Ford 2L GTDI is 23 bar), but soon, you will see far more, over 30 even. All from smaller motors, hence the higher levels (product of size or area).

So, all that from a lowly janitor at Ford.

Imagine what our actual engineers know :2thumbsup:

No lag + no added strain on the motor reducing power + fewer components to to make everything work + should equal less cost + less weight.

Sounds good.

big deal, you've been able to get these for Civics for years. Seriously, go on ebay and you'll see like 100 that give your civi' like 500 FWHP for like $15 SHIPPED, brah
