Why is there such a cost difference between the cars and trucks with the diesel VS gas.
Is it the cost to manufacture?
The fact that it is a more limited production run?
Some other reason?
Does anyone know off hand why there is such a cost difference between motor options?
No idea, maybe more expensive to make?
Wondered that myself. Forgot where i saw it, but diesel while a few cents more than reg, was less than plus or premium
I'm sure part of it is manufacturing costs. The other part will probably because people will pay that much to get the efficiency and power. Ford charges an extra $995+ for the Ecoboost which gives you better power use and better fuel economy. People pay that. I'm sure its the same way with diesel engines and fuel.
They can charge whatever they want. If people are willing to pay more for the diesel variant, they will push the price up. No way are manufacturers gonna be missing out on any potential profit.
It's an economics thing.
I'm guessing it has to with parts.
As Diesels are iron blocks and have forged internal parts(I do believe)
Diesels have different components besides the engine and fuel system. They have different transmission and final drive gearing. The heavier engine requires different suspension parts and tuning, sometimes even tires are specific. Since a diesel doesnt spin at the same speed as a gas motor, the accessories are specific. They have different exhaust systems. In some , there is different sound deadening. They also tend to sell fewer than the gasoline powered counterpart, so you also lose economy of scale, and the profit margin is cranked up to eleven.
I remember reading somewhere that less than 10% of the cost of a car is due to the cost of parts.
And BS, about the economies of scale thing... Most diesel cars that are sold in the US are also sold in Europe where diesel sales massively outweigh petrol sales...
Seriously, it's just the companies being greedy and maximising profit by increasing the price. If people are willing to pay, car companies will only be too happy to increase their prices accordingly.
